Location: DramaTech Theatre, The Georgia Institute of Technology

During the 2012 Fall semester, Rebecca Rouse (LMC - DM PhD candidate) and Melissa Foulger (Artistic Director, DramaTech) co-taught a Special Topics course, LMC 2813,  in the School of Literature, Media and Communication's Science Technology and Culture program regarding the incorporation of digital technology in performance. As part of Rouse’s dissertation, the class explored the history of various technologies in performance, as well as current theories on the topic, and then began working to design and build elements for set and costume incorporating digital technologies to be used in DramaTech’s production of after the quake, directed by Foulger at DramaTech in February 2013.

Reflecting the increased interest in the arts on Georgia Tech’s campus, and the rich set of diverse research projects at Georgia Tech that are focused on various intersections of performance and technology, Rouse and Foulger felt it important to enhance the educational opportunities surrounding the production of after the quake by creating a symposium featuring leaders in the field discussing current theories, sharing their work, and to giving feedback about the successes and failures of after the quake’s use of digital technology on stage.
